“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.” Matthew 22:37-38

The word “love” is spoken very easily in our culture. People “love” everything from hamburgers to new cars to new celebrities. And the way that word is used today has in many ways reduced our understanding of it. God’s word has a great deal to say about love, and in His word, God identifies a starting point for love. True love must begin with a love for Him. God has shown us what love is by sending His Son to die for us, by completing our redemption through the sacrifice of His only begotten Son. And so, in response to that, He says that the first commandment we must follow is to love Him with everything that we are; we must love Him to the exclusion of everything else. And we do that because of who He is, and because of what He has done for us. When we consider the demonstration of His great love for us, a whole-hearted love directed back to Him is the only response that makes sense. What or who do you love today? If you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, then your love must begin with a love for the One who created you, the One who sent His Son to die that we might be saved.
