A good night’s sleep
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” Psalms 4:8
Have you ever had one of those nights where you just couldn’t sleep, where you tossed and turned, and your mind raced from one concern or worry to another and prevented you from sleeping? From all indications, David never had a night like that. According to this verse, there was no worry or concern that ever kept David awake. No matter how difficult the day had been, no matter what event was looming in the future, David could go to sleep at night and leave all of his concerns behind. Now, how was he able to do that? The answer is clear: David knew that the God he served would handle whatever concern he might have. David knew that he belonged to the all-powerful God, and that God cared for His child. And so, David had a confidence in His heavenly Father that allowed him to pass every care off to Him, and David could sleep in peace. And for those of us who know the Lord, the same is true. No matter how bad the day was, no matter what concerns we may face in the future, we are in the hands of the God who can handle it all. And if we will surrender all of our cares to Him and rest in that confidence, we will sleep in peace.
